Starting Suspension Together

a 2 to 3-day workshop with Saara Rei

β€œThe Guide says there is an art to flying", said Ford, "or rather a knack. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss.”

- Douglas Adams, Life, the Universe and Everything

Suspending someone with ropes is often something that is seens as an exciting milestone to achieve. While I personally do not agree with this viewpoint, suspension is certainly something that can be, simply, very exciting! With lot of opportunity for exploration for both the person tying and the person being tied! There are a lot of techniques, schools, and philosophies that begin with rope suspension, and cannot be addressed in one workshop alone. But this workshop can be a start.

The content of this workshop is designed for both people being tied as well as tying who are beginning to suspend/be suspended. We will learn...

  • different ways of constructing and locking off suspension lines,

  • what it means for a structure to be "suspendable" or not from the point of the person being tied and the person tying,

  • different ways of constructing a single column tie, and how each behaves under suspension,

  • basic best (safety) practices for both the person being tied and the person tying when practicing suspension,

  • What can happen during a suspension (nerve compression, fainting, blood constriction, jammed rope, panic, etc.), how it feels, how to prepare, and how to handle such situations,

  • practicing suspensions with three up lines,

  • exploring our limits in suspension,

  • exploring the basics of side, face-up, face-down, and upside down suspensions,

  • body mechancs, and

  • rope tension.

The content of this workshop may vary depending on who is attending the workshop and the needs of the group. Each exercise will have components for both the person being tied and the person tying to explore - I find this perspective important, as at the end of the day, tying is something often done as a team, even if there can be power dynamics involved. By the end of this workshop, everybody should leave with a big toolbox of techniques and experiences needed to start practicing suspension.

Who is this workshop for?
This workshop is appropriate for those who have been practicing rope bondage regularly, have fundamental skills within their muscle memory. For those being tied, this means awareness of physical and mental limits, experience with their body under compression, awareness of body tension and movement, and are comfortable with being tied up. For those tying, this means awareness of physical and mental limits, tying a single column tie is well in your muscle memory, tying frictions is well in your muscle memory, basic awareness of body mechanics, and have good control of rope tension while tying.
