BDSM 101
a 2 to 3-day workshop with Saara Rei
“A beginning is the time for taking the most delicate care that the balances are correct.”
- Frank Herbert, Dune
Bondage, dominance, submission, sadism, and masochism—these practices are far from new. And yet, BDSM is only now becoming more recognized and normalized in Western mainstream culture. With pop culture phenomena like Fifty Shades of Grey, and shows like Bonding and Sex Education introducing kink into everyday conversations, an evening at a bondage class might now seem as ordinary as going to yoga.
As the kinky doors continue to open, it’s important to remember that BDSM is more than just a trending topic—it’s a practice with deep roots, evolving traditions, and diverse schools of thought. With growing access to online platforms like Fetlife, JoyClub, and Darkside, and local scenes offering events, workshops, and communities, beginners are faced with both endless possibilities and the challenge of knowing where—and how—to start.
This workshop is designed to be that starting point.
Together, we’ll explore the foundational elements of BDSM: B-D-S-M—bondage, discipline, dominance, submission, sadism, and masochism—while highlighting the most important, often unspoken “C”: Consent. Consent is the red thread that runs through every ethical kink practice, regardless of tradition or style.
This introduction is rooted in Saara’s 10+ years of experience as a student, private practitioner, and facilitator in the world of BDSM. Their journey includes monogamous and polyamorous power exchange relationships, diverse play partnerships, group and friendship-based exploration, as well as work as a fetish model, porn performer, sex worker, and BDSM educator and performer. These personal and professional experiences shape the content and spirit of this class.
In this workshop, we will cover:
Verbal and nonverbal communication tools
Consent and negotiation: best practices for building trust
Basics of rope bondage
Physical and emotional pain: playing safely and intentionally
Power dynamics: how to create and navigate play vs. reality
Tips on finding community and building connections
This workshop offers a grounded, thoughtful entry point into BDSM, designed to give you the confidence to begin exploring safely, ethically, and curiously.
Who is this workshop for?
This class is ideal for beginners with little or no prior BDSM experience. Curious newcomers, individuals or couples, all genders and orientations are warmly welcome. More experienced kinksters interested in fresh perspectives are also invited—as long as they respect that the space is centered on beginner education and exploration.
