BDSM 101

a 2 to 3-day workshop with Saara Rei

“A beginning is the time for taking the most delicate care that the balances are correct.”

- Frank Herbert, Dune

Bondage, dominance, submission, sadism, and masochism; they are nothing new for humanity, and yet BDSM is slowly becoming more normalize as a civil practice in western society. With 50 Shades of Grey becoming a common pop culture motif, and popular NETFLIX shows popping up, like Bonding and Sex Education, suddenly going to an evening bondage class seems no more as strange as evening yoga!

Now that the kinky doors begin to open more an more, we must keep in mind that BDSM is a practice with history, traditions, and many schools of thought. Along with various different social media platforms, such as Fetlife, JoyClub, and Darkside, there are likely communities, meet ups, and venues for parties and learning near your hometown. But, with all these possibilities it can often be hard to know exactly where and how to start.

This workshop is meant to be a starting point. We will cover the basics of B-DS-SM, along with the fundamental, unspoken letter C, for consent, posing as the red line through every practice in every school worth encountering. Of course, this start will be colored by Saara’s own background and experiences in their 10+ years of practicing BDSM as a student, private person, and facilitator. Within these 10+ years, Saara has explored monogomous and polyamourous BDSM relationships structured around different power structures, different kinds of play partnerships, and exploring BDSM practices with friends and in groups. Saara has worked as a fetish model, porn performer, and sex worker as well as a BDSM workshop facilitator and performer. These personal and professional experiences curate the content of this beginner’s workshop. Specifically, within this workshop, we will cover:

          • Verbal & nonverbal communication practices

          • Consent and common best practices for establishing a consensual session

          • Rope bondage basics

          • Playing with physical and emotional pain

          • Power Dynamics and how to establish healthy boundaries between play and reality

This workshop hopes to give a solid base of information and understanding needed to know how to start meeting likeminded people, start playing, and how to further explore the topics that are interesting for you!
