Lessons from kink for business

a half-day workshop with Saara Rei

“Quality is everyone's responsibility.”

- W. Edwards Deming

While our boss might not be tying us to a chair, we certainly might feel bound to their latest sprint plan. We deal with negotiations, contracts, and common displays of the chain of hierarchy that structures our workplace. Often we can find ourselves talking about doing work tasks we don’t like, or that we don’t want to do, because we have to… because that is we were told to do… sometimes we have space to discuss and renegotiate our terms, and sometime we don’t. And often this is not questioned. And on the flip-side, sometimes we are the boss, and we are the one calling the shots and deciding what is the best direction for our workforce, and we need to decide how we go about doing that: with benevolence, force, democracy, dictatorship...

Within the practice of BDSM, most of us dive deep into topics such as consent, power dynamics, and pain (both physical as well as mental). Building awareness around the dynamics of our relationships, understanding what we want, and don't want, is central to BDSM practie... but somehow not in our "everyday" lives. There has been a tremendous body of knowledge that has been built within the interlinking sex postive communities that provide tools for better communication and personal awareness, in ever sense of the word. The reality is that power dynamics and pain are part of our everyday lives, including our workplaces, and the insights we have gained conciously practicing BDSM can be valuable in every aspect of life... and in particular, in the office.

This is a talk along with faciliated discussion and exercises addressing what lessons we have learned in our BDSM pracices and how we can apply these lessons to the workplace. You can be a kinkster with little or no office experience, or spend all your days in the office with no BDSM experience! All are welcome who would be interested in addressing this topic from any perspective.
